The American Red Cross provides basic humanitarian services to members of the
Armed Forces, their families and veterans during peacetime and conflict - at
home, around the world and on ships at sea.
Today's Red Cross is keeping pace with the changing
military. Using the latest in computer and
telecommunications technology, the Red Cross sends
communications on behalf of family members who are
facing emergencies or other important events to members
of the U.S. Armed Forces serving all over the world.
These communications are delivered around-the-clock, 7
days a week, 365 days a year.
Emergency Communications
SAF workers can relay information about births of
children, serious illnesses or deaths of family members
and other emergency situations. Red Cross emergency
messages provide military personnel and their commanders
with fast, reliable, verified information to help them
make decisions regarding leave. When calling the Red
Cross to request an emergency message be sent, it is
helpful to have the following information:
- Full name
- Rank/rating
- Branch of service
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Military address
Emergency Financial Assistance
The Red Cross works with military aid societies (Army
Emergency Relief, Navy Marine Corps Relief Society, Air
Force Aid Society and the Coast Guard Mutual
Assistance). This partnership helps provide financial
assistance for urgent needs. Referrals to specialized
sources of help are also available to service members
and their families.
Humanitarian Reassignment and Hardship Discharge
If a hardship exists within a service family AFES
workers can obtain verification of the situation for the
service member who can then make a decision on whether
to request either a humanitarian reassignment closer to
home or hardship discharge. The AFES worker can help the
family to understand the procedures and documentation
needed. Decisions on these applications are made by
military authorities.
Veterans
The Red Cross can provide a link for assistance and
information to veterans through the Department of
Veterans Affairs.
Information and Helpful Guides
The Red Cross is also a source of counseling,
information, referrals and other social services to
military families.
